Well if you haven’t heard, the American Government shutdown. Yep! Sure did! Well, I think at least one department didn’t shut down – the complaint department. At least, judging by comments on social media, that’s the conclusion one would have to draw. The thing I noticed was the tenor of the comments from my Christian brothers and sisters regarding this political matter. I just want to offer a few thoughts on that particular point. Today was the anniversary of when America was rocked to it’s very core. Fear struck us all. But then again, that’s exactly what THEY wanted wasn’t it? That’s why they’re called “terrorists”. their goal is to strike fear in the hearts of the people at the place where people feel the safest. And their plan worked… for a while. But what I saw today told a completely different story.
Instance 1: We are on vacation in Gulf Shores, AL. It’s a beautiful place, and the second time I’ve been here (the first was 9 years ago on my honeymoon). We were out shopping as is apparently customary for many vacationers to do, and this particular outlet grouping had taken consideration of all the husband-fathers who were reluctantly drug along as they had built a conveniently placed children’s play area in the center of all the stores. I sat and watch my 3 boys play with the other children as if nothing were wrong with the world while there was an American flag half-mast to remind me of what happened on this day so many years ago. In front of that flag I saw joy on the faces of children and their parents as they played. Fear had not won out!
Instance 2: Later this evening I was walking the beach with my beautiful wife, and we passed a small marriage ceremony. This bride, groom, matron/maid of honor, best man, and the wedding officiator were symbolizing far more than they realized. Love was being expressed on this day – 9/11. Fear didn’t win, love won!
These things are a shadow of things to come. I know it’s to come as the Reality of it has already come and spoken these words:
“Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. You know the way to where I am going… I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:1-4, 6
Fear loses and (to quote a controversial author) “Love wins!”
“Fear not.” ~ JESUS
DID defeat the enemy….
For God was pleased to have
all His fullness dwell in Him,
and through Him to reconcile
everything to Himself
by making peace
through the blood of His cross—
whether things on earth or things in heaven.
American Church, are you sure you really want to follow Him?
I recently watched a youtube video by an individual who is part of the Independent Fundamental Baptist movement and has decided to condemn what they like to call “CCM” (contemporary Christian music). He claims it’s wicked by showing pictures of how similar CCM groups look to “secular” rock musicians and bands. He also picks some extremely far out examples that are not main stream contemporary Christian music. Masses in the IFB movement screamed “FOUL!” when 20/20 did their expose on it, claiming 20/20only showed the extreme crazies that do not accurately represent the movement as a whole (personally, I think 20/20 did a pretty fair job at accurately representing the movement). Somehow they seem to have no compunction of engaging in the same type of dishonesty they condemn (most would call that hypocrisy). Read the rest of this entry »
I have read Facebook statuses this morning by believers who are rejoicing in the death of Osama Bin Laden. They justify their joy by citing verses such as Proverbs 11:10 “When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and when the wicked perish, there is jubilation.” But is this right? Is this the reaction a child of God should have? Is this how a follower of Jesus should respond to the death of a very wicked man? Read the rest of this entry »
I realize today is Valentine’s Day, and that many people expect something NOT like what I am about to share. Those who know me know I am not one who feels bound to convention and sometimes intentionally break it.But to keep the peace as much as is possibly while I still get my way, I will ask you to read the following post concerning Christianity and American patriotism from a “Valentine’s Day” perspective. How? By asking yourself if a divided love is really love? Jesus said we cannot serve two masters. Have we conflated American patriotism with biblical Christianity thus committing a form of spiritual adultery? The author of the article, Gregory N Barkman, that I share below makes a good point in my opinion. What do you think? Read the rest of this entry »
